Historic Booklet for McCauley

Call for community assistance!

What are the stories behind “Church Street”? Why was 96 Street called Kinistino? We know about Matthew McCauley, the first mayor of Edmonton and our namesake, but there are many more stories we do not know. Help us discover them!

Residents are needed to spearhead a booklet that will recognize and celebrate the historical significance of the McCauley neighbourhood. It will tell the stories of our community: of the original street names, our parks, heritage buildings, and community life. We will talk to seniors within McCauley, listening to and gathering their memories of McCauley as they grew up.

One of our noted residents, Antoinette Grenier, has lived in the same house in McCauley since 1925 and has been faithfully compiling community history through newspaper articles, photos, and her memories. “If we don’t write down our stories, we’re going to lose them and someone will have to continue after I pass away,” says Grenier, 92. We need her story and more!

If you are a senior and would like to tell us about your memories, call or email the Boyle McCauley News office. Share your photos, family stories, and experiences.

If you wish to be part of a small group of residents to guide the project, contact the paper as well.

This booklet will complement the Community Walking Map that has recently been published for the McCauley neighbourhood. This map begins to name some of the history and routes to walk within the community. Community Revitalization Project money was secured to research and create this booklet. Both guides could be used on guided tours that could take place at community festivals.

Help the rest of Edmonton take increased interest in McCauley and view it as a destination where one can walk and enjoy the community while learning about the richness and diversity of its history and inhabitants.
