Wecan Food Basket: Food Without Walls

The Wecan Food Basket Society is a not-for-profit organization that believes every individual has a right to quality, fresh, and nutritious food. This food cooperative operates locally and is based on memberships. Each year, Wecan participants buy a $5 membership in order to buy fresh food through the society.

With 28 depots in Edmonton and area, and around 600 – 700 food basket orders each month, Wecan is a valuable asset to the community, providing individuals and families with fresh, affordable food to supplement their regular grocery bill.

The Wecan Food Basket Society operates as a “warehouse without walls” – we buy all our food in bulk and distribute it to depots throughout the Edmonton area. With the help of local churches, community centres, and daycares, Wecan is able to host depots in a variety of areas. The food basket program works on the strength of our members who volunteer their time. Once a month, member drivers pick up the food from our supplier, The Grocery People, and take it to the depots. Members then count, sort, and pack the baskets ready for pick up.

Fresh food is the staple of any healthy diet. Our food baskets offer three cuts of frozen meat, three types of fresh vegetables and 3 kinds of seasonal fruit every month, along with helpful recipes to prepare healthy meals. Meat orders are $15 and produce orders are $10. A complete food basket of meat, vegetables and fruit is only $25.

Members prepay for their food basket(s) by the first Friday of each month at their nearest depot. In downtown Edmonton, E4C at McCauley Apartments collects funds at their office (B08, 9541 108A Avenue) and coordinates the City Centre depot in the gymnasium at McCauley Boys & Girls Club (9425 109A Avenue). Members can pick up their basket(s) at the City Centre depot on the third Thursday of each month, between 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

For more information about joining Wecan as a participant or as a volunteer in City Centre, please call McCauley Apartments Program Manager David Prodan at (780) 424-2870.
