Cafés and Coffee in McCauley

Coffee, and the places where it is consumed, are central to community in McCauley.

Most of my days begin with coffee. It always comes first and sometimes makes me late.

I know of an article in the Journal of Nutrition asking the question: is coffee a functional food? (Functional foods are essentially based on foods’ ability to enhance the quality of life or physical and mental performance of regular consumers. The worldwide use of coffee for social engagement, leisure, enhancement of work performance, and well-being is widely recognized.) I leave it for you to read the article to enhance your café experience.

The original Bar Italia on 95 Street had been one of my favourite spots for cappuccino since I moved to Edmonton in the early 80s. After Bar Italia closed I was to discover other gems in the neighbourhood.

A latte at the Tra Amici (also now gone).

Espresso after a platter of mussels at Sorrentino’s or Pizza Bianca at Tony’s.

Early morning walks to coffee at La Dolce Vita and ice cream for the small ones!

And now Bar Italia has returned as Spinelli’s Bar Italia.

And more joys to follow!

Cappuccino in the greenhouse at Zocalo or after a plate of Calamari at Santos.

Strong Ethiopian coffee on my neighbour’s porch or after a lamb dinner at the Abyssinia.

Croatian coffee at Kafana following a bowl of the finest soup made me think of my childhood physician Dr. Becky.

It really is home away from home and my two-cup percolator! Spinelli’s Bar Italia now has their summer coffees listed – which, for summer means I will forego cappuccino or latte with a Florentine for the café affogato (gelato with a shot of espresso poured over it).

Meet me in McCauley for coffee!
