Commonwealth Rec Centre Opens This Month

The new Commonwealth Community Recreation Centre (CCRC) will be open to the public in March 2012 after over two years of construction. Instead of having to detour around this large construction site to get from the heart of McCauley to the Stadium LRT station and other points east, residents will be able to walk through the new building (during operating hours), thereby cutting up to 10 minutes off their travel time.

McCauley is getting a massive, multifaceted community resource on our doorstep. The facility has a four lane, 25 metre fitness pool; a leisure pool with beach, spray, and water slide features; a fitness centre with separate weight and cardio rooms; a full-service gymnasium for basketball, volleyball, badminton, and soccer; a field house with a running track; and, a variety of multipurpose rooms for cultural, artistic, and community functions.

Project Supervisor Daren Dwernychuk notes that operational plans include drop-in opportunities for aquasize, Zumba, aerobics, basketball, and soccer and says two lanes of the fitness pool as well as the leisure pool will be available for public use, even when school groups come or lessons are under way.

“Unlike the Kinsmen, which was developed for elite athlete development,” he explains, “the CCRC is focused on personal and family fitness and leisure. Our intent is to make the CCRC a community hub.” He added that although the facility is open to the whole city, the focus in developing the centre has been primarily on the needs of people living within 2.5 kilometers.

The doors are scheduled to open to the public at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, March 13. The Official Opening and VIP Ribbon Cutting ceremony is planned for Wednesday, March 28 at 10 a.m. A Community Celebration Party is set for Saturday, March 31 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
