Fort McMurray Evacuees in McCauley

As I was out working in the garden in mid-May, a family walked by with two little children. I had not seen them before. To me they looked like a grandmother, a mother, and two children.

We both said hello and I asked them if they lived around here. They said they were from Fort Mac and were staying here until they could go back. They said their house had been burned, but they had insurance, so it would be okay eventually.

My heart went out to them – they have been through so much, just getting out of Fort Mac. Some people have told me it took them 15 hours to drive out—the traffic was so slow, and with the fire on both sides, it was very, very scary. So, they are glad to be here, and we should look out for them, as they will need our help.

I’ve seen several families around that are new, so there may be a number of evacuee families living right nearby. I hope we will show them every kindness in this time of extreme trauma. They need some kindness or a friendly “hello.”

I hope they will stop by again.
