Gearing Up for HOTC’s 10th Anniversary

Heart of the City volunteers have been super busy planning really exciting things leading up to our 10th anniversary festival on Saturday June 1 and Sunday June 2 at Giovanni Caboto Park.

There have been three solid packed Heart of Open Mic Night coffeehouses at Pacific Café in December, January, and February, showcasing some of the finest talents in the area! A few of the musicians at these coffeehouses were even offered an opportunity to record songs at CJSR! Some of these songs will be featured on the 10th Anniversary HOTC Compilation! We also received many fantastic mp3, wav, and CD submissions from local artists. Our Music Committee is meeting regularly to curate which of these many excellent songs will be released on our compilation! Many thanks to Nhan Lu, owner of Pacific Café, a truly gracious hostess who has helped the local music community grow a lot this last year. And kudos to all the musicians who hooked us up with tunes! It’s been great listening, and we anticipate a solid compilation release.

If you didn’t get a chance to play one of our coffeehouses or to submit to the compilation, there are still ways to be involved with our 10th anniversary! Musicians who want to play at the festival are invited to join us for auditions at Pacific Café (10874 97 Street) on Thursday April 4 and Saturday April 6. Auditions were originally advertised to take place at the McCauley Boys and Girls Club, but we decided to change venues so we didn’t get in the way of their cool new renovations! To register for an audition, please contact heartcitymusic@gmail.com.

Visual artists are invited to apply for free vending tables at the Heart of the City. Each year we host over 30 visual artists who sell paintings, drawings, photos, sculpture, found art, zines, graffiti, clothes, jewellery, and much more in our vendor’s market! HOTC covers the cost of the permit to sell art in the park, and many of the artists are also involved as workshop facilitators. If you’d like to sell your work, or run an arts workshop at the festival, please contact heartcityart@gmail.com.

Our fundraising team is pulling together an exciting silent auction and live music fundraiser at the Artery on Thursday, April 25. The Artery is a fantastic independent venue and festival sponsor located at 9535 Jasper Avenue. Featured performers at the fundraiser include Marlaena Moore, Andrew Scott, and the Eville Turntable Choir. The event will feature a silent auction including one-of-a-kind homemade and painted instruments, works by local visual artists, and our usual crop of awesome local swag. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. for the April 25 fundraiser. Tickets are $10 at the door.
