Hello, neighbours! 2014 promises to be a very busy year. Your Board of Directors has been hard at work.

We are still awaiting confirmation of the City of Edmonton about changes to how the Edmonton and District Labour Council (EDLC) BBQ will happen. Our Board of Directors has proposed a rotating schedule of five different sites, of which Caboto Park will be one, to ensure dispersal throughout all neighbourhoods. We are also requesting supplemental police presence on the day of the event in order to facilitate any concerns that might arise as well as developing relationships between local beat and patrol officers and residents.

In December, a Special Meeting was held regarding the Rink. The initial motion of this meeting failed, but the Board of Directors and membership agreed to the League participating in mediation and negotiation with KIDS regarding programming and the development of a partnership agreement for winter 2014 and beyond. Those meetings were held throughout December 2013 and January 2014 with the help of facilitators generously provided to MCL and KIDS by the City of Edmonton. Special thanks to our CRC Karen Kennedy for providing this service.

As a result of these negotiations, volunteer Sebastian Lysz has agreed to head up our Rink Communications role, and Joan Kirillo, Al Hamilton (both with KIDS), and Sebastian were scheduled to meet at the end of January to provide a draft for ongoing operations of the Rink.

Soccer planning is well underway for 2014 Outdoor season. Registration will be February 27 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club; March 4 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club; and, March 8 from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Commonwealth Rec Centre. If you’re interested and available, please get in touch. We would love to have the extra help. This year, we’re going to be recruiting for coaches and assistant coaches. It’s a fabulous way to get fit, have fun, and make a contribution to the neighbourhood.
