Journey of Learning

Today is a brisk, windy day but pleasant at the same time. My brother Frank is showing me how to tell what the weather is going to be like by just looking to see which way the wind is blowing. You see, in my Native culture, people used to look to nature for signs of weather changes. I enjoy learning new things that as a youth I never understood or was never taught.

Learning is a life-long journey. I desire to continue to grow and bloom in my understanding of the world around me and how to live a simple life. I lived in the quiet little town of Ryley when I was growing up. Moving to a big city when I was around eleven was a new challenge. I had to adjust to ways such as taking a bus and making new friends. In doing so, I was learning to make valuable changes that affected the future.

That being said, as an adult I now would like to take some upgrading classes. Now that my kids are growing up, I have a chance to take more training in areas of my life in order to overcome some challenges.

Nothing happens without a cause. I know I have a purpose being a community member in McCauley. Just to learn the history of this community helps me to want to do more for this area. The events that happen often start with one person’s idea which grows to prosper into a yearly event. I remember living here as a youth, but because my parents were not familiar with our surroundings my sister and I had to take a bus to a junior high on the other side of Kingsway Garden Mall.

Now, with all the schools shutting down, I find sometimes it can be a challenge to redirect children to surrounding schools nearby. The other option would be to home school your children, which I tried my hand at. It was quite a learning experience because the concepts in different subjects have changed, proving to be very challenging for me. That is why as a mature student, I need to go back to upgrade in order to be a good teacher and advisor or whatever I can be.

Time is a good healer and so as I go about the neighbourhood, I see so many good changes happening. Making lifestyle changes for the better, rediscovering one’s values, and being a good teacher for your children will impact them forever.
