McCauley Cup and Family Day Celebrations

Despite the strange weather, family-oriented events abound at the McCauley Rink

What a winter it has been for our outdoor skating rink. The weather has been perfect for the ice and good for programs too. Looking back at my article in November, I was actually a bit worried that the cold weather wasn’t coming fast enough. No worries about cold weather today – as I write this, it is minus 25. A bit too cold for programming, but never too cold for the “die hards.”

We held the second annual McCauley Cup on December 22. The Downtown Division Beat Officers came out and played a fun game of shinny hockey with the youth from McCauley. The turnout for the event was very good from both the police and local kids. There was a wiener roast, hot chocolate, and lots of other goodies. We even had a special guest. Nick Holden, who has played a few games this year with the Columbus Blue Jackets NHL team, came out and had some fun with the kids. Nick was also responsible for rounding up some of the spectacular prizes that were given out to the kids. Some of the prizes were hockey sticks, an Edmonton Oilers hat signed by Devan Dubnyk, and an Edmonton Oilers jersey. Thanks to Trevor Murphy from the Edmonton Oilers and Sunshine Productions for the prizes as well.

For me, I enjoyed the atmosphere of hearing kids laugh, watching the beat cops interact with the kids, and knowing that just a few days before Christmas, the community skating rink was the best place to be.

All the food, hot chocolate, and drinks came from the following businesses: Lucky 97, Italian Bakery, Italian Centre Shop, and Second Cup (Namao). United Cycle provided the game jerseys. E4C’s McCauley apartments provided staff. Also, none of this would be possible without the commitment from the McCauley Community League. A very special thank you to Sgt. Dave Kabyn who did a lot of work to make this event happen. Thanks also to all the Downtown Division Beat Cops who came out and helped make this event a success. It means a lot to the youth of my community when members of the local beat take the time to come out to the rink and have some fun with the local kids.

We are starting to gear up towards the annual Family Day skating rink party on February 21 from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. Once again we will be having a wiener roast, marshmallows, hot chocolate, and gifts for all the kids. Skates will be available for anyone who needs a pair, and everyone is invited to come on down and enjoy Family Day with your neighbours and friends.
