Meet the BRZ

Edmonton presently has 12 Business Revitalization Zones. Each zone is a unique opportunity for businesses to work together to accomplish mutual goals that address the customers’ need for a safe, interesting and attractive place to shop, dine, socialize, and conduct business. Individually, these BRZs have different characters, sizes, and target populations. However they aim to meet the needs of their business members, to contribute to the quality of life of the surrounding communities, and to be an integral component of what makes Edmonton an interesting, vibrant, and economically sound place. Business Revitalization Zones are recognized for their part in fostering what Richard Florida refers to as the ‘Creative Class’. If this group of people can live a comfortable, prosperous and sustainable lifestyle, then the area supports it and its success is an indicator of the health of an area and of a city. Several of Edmonton’s Business Revitalization Zones are locations that attract these populations. If they are healthy, then the rest of the city will do well.

The Mission of the Chinatown and Little Italy BRZ is to create a safe and vibrant multicultural showcase in the heart of Edmonton designed to attract businesses, citizens and tourists to a smorgasbord of shopping and cultural experiences.

The Chinatown and Little Italy (97 Street and Area) Business Revitalization Zone was established in 2000 and represents approximately 260 businesses in the area from 105 to 110 Avenue from 95 to 101 Street. The BRZ continues to focus on economic development and business retention in the area, as well as street maintenance and beautification. Increasing attention has been directed to street maintenance and security, retail recruitment, as well as parking issues.

The Chinatown and Little Italy BRZ has created a strategic business plan. This Plan will be reviewed on an annual basis to keep it current. This ambitious plan has the potential to significantly improve the BRZ area and to help revitalize this area of the city. This is a great opportunity to draw more tourists to our city as this rich multicultural area is truly a hidden gem with great potential.

The BRZ has identified a number of strategies and tasks as part of this plan. There are four key priorities that will help revitalize the McCauley area while also providing an important anchor to attract shoppers, tourists and visitors to this area.
