Staying Warm This Winter

Hello McCauley. Happy winter! After a nice, hot summer and a leisurely fall, the snow and cold have decided it’s time to camp out for a while. But that cold means ice, and ice means fun for a lot of our neighbours.

Yes, the McCauley community rink is up and running. We are excited about the skating season starting and all the programming that has been added. We have made sure that there is programming for all ages and families. Please check out the McCauley Community League website for the program schedule. Also, if you have any ideas for programming please contact the recreation committee at

In case you missed it, on November 29, the League hosted roundtable conversations at the Commonwealth Rec Centre to discuss three topics of interest currently at play in our community.

As promised at the last AGM, we considered the dynamics of spatial concentration of poverty. We also had a round table where neighbours could share their concerns around crime and safety. At our third table, we discussed the future of the EDLC Labour Day BBQ. The League was glad to see those who came out and looks forward to reporting back some of what we heard in our next issue.

As the winter gets rolling, let’s make an effort to keep an eye out for each other. This time of year can be quite lonely for many, so let’s find ways to break that isolation. Get out and shovel a neighbour’s sidewalk. Knock on a door and offer to bring over some hot chocolate or soup. When it’s this cold outside, we have to work a little harder to make our neighbourhood warm.

As always, feel free to contact us with ideas, concerns, questions, or if you’re interested in helping out. Check out our website for resources and upcoming events: Look us up on Facebook, or email us at Or, you can stop by and visit us at our board meetings. We meet the first Tuesday of every month from 7-10 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club. Stay warm!

Mike is the President of the McCauley Community League.
