U14 Dragons Bring Home Gold

McCauley team makes history by winning Soccer Provincial Championships

The award-winning U14 Dragons. Dan Glugosh

The McCauley U14 Dragons have created history in McCauley by doing what no other McCauley soccer team has done before: taking home the gold medal and trophy at the Alberta Soccer Provincial Championships.

The Provincials were hosted this year by EMSA, Edmonton Minor Soccer Association, from July 25-27 at the South Soccer Center, located in the deep south of Edmonton. There were eight teams in the Tier 4 division, which is the highest community division in Provincials, as Tier 1-3 is for Club Soccer. There were three teams from Edmonton, two from Calgary, one from Taber, one from Fort Saskatchewan, and one from Canal Links.

The final match was the McCauley Dragons versus Twin Brooks, one of the Edmonton teams, whom they had also battled and defeated in the City Finals earlier that month. It was a close, intense game that ended in a 2-1 victory for McCauley. The last five minutes of the game seemed an eternity, as we waited for the referee to sound the three long whistles that would end the game. We had quite a large crowd of family and friends watching that day and when the whistle finally blew, the sidelines erupted with hoots and howls and cheers of victory.

This was not the first gold medal for the McCauley Dragons. It started in June, when the North Zone hosted their annual Summer Sizzler Tournament and the McCauley Dragons finished on top, taking their first gold medal of the year. Then, at the City finals held July 3 -July 5, the McCauley Dragons played another close game which ended in a 2-1 shoot-out victory. This was an important win as it also awarded the Dragons a berth at the Alberta Provincial Championship.

It has been an exciting season and there are so many folks to thank who were a large part of the McCauley Dragons’ success. A huge thank-you to Calvin Maxfield, the head coach, for his energy and love for the game, his positive coaching skills, and continual encouragement to all the kids on the team. Thanks to Jason Du, Moe Taha, Dean Leiu, Julie Luciow, and many other parents, who either assistant-coached, managed, or were incredibly helpful in organizing refreshments for the team, team jackets, rides, setting up nets, filling out scoresheets, referee liasoning, and always being there! Thanks to our sponsors – the Italian Centre, Tony’s Pizza, Sport Chek, and Stadium Save-on Foods, and the McCauley Community League. Thanks to ASA (Alberta Soccer Association), EMSA, and special thanks to the Edmonton North Zone Soccer Association for their support.

And last, but not least, thanks to a great bunch of kids and fantastic athletes: Emmett Maxfield, Jordan Luciow, Tyler Morin, Adam Kuipers-Glugosh, Fabian Bubel-Hopkins, Prueh Eh, Yar Manar, Evelyn Phan, Saul Campos-Garcia, Gage Campbell, Tanner Possnett, Desmond Blackwater, Alvin Du, Ali Taha, Adam Taha, Matthew Lawrence, Noah Young, Xavier Haro, Taylor Dumka, and Hserteet Hser.
