Kindness in Our Daily Lives

My husband always opens the door for me and others when we go to the mall. Recently, while I was waiting for him I noticed that some families with their children said thanks to him while some did not say anything or look at him at all.

Another time, at the parking lot I let another driver cut me off and get the stall. I drove to another stall.

My daughter said, “We should park there. We were first. That driver was rude.” I replied, “He needed it. We were not in a hurry.” That ended the conversation (thankfully).

However, I don’t always understand exactly what a person wants or needs. Are my actions appropriately and effectively kind?

In day to day life, there are many circumstances where I need to be responsible, to be the best example of the meaning of kindness for my children, and to demonstrate generosity to those in need.

Here are some ways to show kindness:

  • Read to a child (or a group of children).
  • Start a community garden.
  • Tutor newcomers in English.
  • Be a courteous driver.
  • Sing a song, write a poem, or tell a joke.
  • Organize a neighbourhood watch.
  • Recycle.
  • Hold a door open for someone.

I gratefully acknowledge Boyle McCauley News for giving me an opportunity to show kindness.
