Pray a Little Prayer

I think about old friends and acquaintances when I remember times when I needed help in one form or another. Many a time, I wondered what to do so I learned to pray to God.

I was going through a bad moment in my life when I was on the verge of losing my mom. She was very ill at the time and I was in despair. I was sent someone who was like the Good Samaritan in the Bible. He helped me up many times when I fell down.
I met this person at a flea market located on 118 Avenue and 90 Street. Many times I believe God sends angels or helpers to serve us in one capacity or another. In my case, I was reaching out because I had bouts with depression and anxiety back then due to not knowing how to process my emotions. This kind soul taught me about God just by being a friend when I needed one.

When I sprained my ankle I called him, and he took time to just take me to the medical centre and wait with me until I got attended to and drove me home afterwards. In the process he sat and comforted me by just talking to me. Sometimes I find that is all I need is to have a support person with me.

One act of random kindness cascades into more blessings in other ways. I used to minister at a soup kitchen for a number of years and I met a man who seemed so lost and angry inside. He would be easily irritated but on his good days he would actually be quite nice. I would pray for him often. One day he got so upset with someone at the mission that he left and I never saw him again.

About a year later, I happened to be at the soup kitchen again. In walks this man who I don’t remember ever seeing before. However, he came up to me and then I realized that it was that very man who a year before was an angry person. His life was transformed. He was well-spoken, emotionally on an even keel, and well-dressed. He had moved to B.C. and was living a very good life.

Never underestimate what a little help from others can do, backed up by prayer. Praying for others really does help because I wouldn’t be writing for this paper or able to help others in any capacity otherwise. I love doing outreach, even just going for coffee and sitting and listening to someone else. I try to help others address their issues by directing them to resources they may not know they can access.

I also find I am drawn to people who are kind, because it helps me in my own life, especially when I am going through trying times, I am happy to be alive and I give thanks to God in prayer daily for wonderful people I meet in my community.
