Boyle Street Summer

The wonderful thing about living in Boyle Street is the walkability we have that allows us to enjoy so many wonderful summer activities. There is some great fun planned for the summer right here in the heart of Boyle Street!

City of Edmonton Green Shack playground program at Mother Theresa School Park (9008 – 105A Avenue)
Join in games, sports, crafts, music, drama, and theme days every weekday for ages 6-12. Children under the age of 6 are welcome as well, but must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times Find a calendar of planned activities on the side of each Green Shack each week. If there’s a game you’d like to play, just ask the Program Leader! Also check for the Flying Eagle program being offered at this Green Shack as well.

Another great City program for children ages 8-13 in our community is Broadway Bound from Aug. 4 to 14 at the Boyle Street Plaza. Are you Broadway Bound? Two full weeks will introduce you to the lifestyle of musical theatre. Learn the triple threat of song, drama, and dance from our experienced leaders. This unique experience will finish with a musical performance for friends and family. A field trip event is also included. For more information, to check availability and schedules, and to register call 311.

Make sure to join us for our Canada Day celebration with the BSCL at the Plaza and in the park commencing at 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. We will have a BBQ, music and entertainment and a bouncy castle!

In June we held our first “Coffee in the Quarters” and we are hoping to make this a regular offering. If you are interested in our Community Cafe at the Boyle Street Community League please visit our web site or Facebook page to see dates of operation. If you are a budding barista and would like to volunteer your time to help, give us a call at (780) 422-5857.

Do you need to clean house or simply downsize? On July 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. come be a part of the Community Garage Sale and Donation Event. If you would like to have a table at the garage sale you must register at (780) 422-5857. Fee is $5/table. Donations will also be taken. Clothing, household items etc. in good condition will be accepted.

If you feel your junk is really junk and just want to get rid of it (do you still have that television set from 1978? That old chair the cat has now claimed as its personal scratching post? What about the couch that even your worst enemy wouldn’t want to crash on?) keep your eyes open for the community big bin event coming to your neighbourhood August 15 and 16. We can pick up your large items and bring it to the big bin event for disposal for only $5/big item. Let’s keep our community clean!

For those of us that have to work through the summer and could use some relaxation, we are starting a new yoga class that will be offering lunch hour classes during weekdays (fee by donation). The instructor will be Mike Holliday. Mike has spent almost half of the past 10 years in India studying Vedic culture and the Vedic life sciences. He has been teaching yoga around the world for the past five years. His classes are a simple form of Hatha Yoga focused on stretching and relaxation. Anyone can do it as he adjusts the classes for the students. His classes are relaxed and non-judgmental so don’t worry about coming late and leaving early. Busy schedules are a way of life that everyone must adjust to. Check out the BSCL website and our Facebook page for dates and times. Namaste.

As well keep a lookout for these other wonderful programs happening during the summer:

  • Friday night Badminton: League members can play for $3. Two hours of play time.
  • Movie night: Coming soon. Watch the BSCL web site or our Facebook page for more details.
  • Family Dance Night: Coming in August.
  • Quarters Arts Nights
  • Senior Ballroom Dance night.

On Wednesday, June 7 Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues held the Community League Showcase and paid tribute to many hard working volunteers who donate countless hours for numerous community leagues around our city. The BSCL recipient was Elaine Dyrberg who works tirelessly to help with programs and special events for the BSCL. A big thank you to Elaine and all our valuable BSCL volunteers who contribute so much!
