Get Your Boots On

Last year, I made a prediction. I foresaw a winter full of snow and cold temperatures. Not just a little cold and some snow, but a deep freeze.

I was right.

You see, winter in Edmonton seems to follow cycles. We had a really mild winter last year. So, we had to make up for it this year. It is a winter that, thus far, is like the winter of 2010 which was also knee-deep with snow and day after day of sub-Arctic temperatures. A pattern has emerged.

Yes, Edmonton is a winter city. Winter, around here, usually equals snow and cold. A lot of people I speak to say they prefer to stay inside as much as possible during winter. That is understandable. However, we can’t just hibernate inside for all of the winter months. We have to venture out sometimes, if even just to gather essential necessities like food or going to medical appointments. Social isolation is a big part of why many don’t like winter, I think. Skipping events just because you don’t like going out in the cold is unhealthy, mentally and physically.

A large part of surviving the winter is simply dressing for it. Don’t assume that just because you only have a couple of blocks to walk, that you don’t need to bundle up. Trust me, you will be miserable before you reach your destination.

Layers are not just for outdoor athletes. I myself have become intimately acquainted with thermal undergarments, lest I freeze at the various outdoor rallies I attend. Also, hand and foot warming packs can be useful at times and can be purchased inexpensively at most sporting goods stores.

Winters make us tougher as people. So, get your boots on, get outside, and get some fresh air. Your lungs and body will thank you, eventually. And warmer weather will one day be here again. It’s all part of the cycle.
