Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - Respect!

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children. Native American Proverb.

First recognized as an annual celebration and appreciation of our beautiful planet in 1970, every April 22 marks Earth Day. Over 192 nations recognize this day, which also raises awareness of the need for protection of our planet.

You have likely heard the phrase “reduce, reuse, recycle” – personally, I am very fond of the “re” prefix as I *re*habilitate daily and it *re*news my mental and physical state!

A lot of importance must be taken towards being environmentally responsible so that we can leave this beautiful earth for the future generations. In my housing co-op, recycling is encouraged and we have a separate bin to discard recyclable items. We even have an area in our back parking area where, for a small fee, members can put out larger items that are taken to the Eco Station.

The City of Edmonton’s website has great information for “what goes where” to guide you to the proper disposal of items. Visit the City’s website at www.edmonton.ca and type in “recycling” as a search term.

Also, they say “one person’s junk is another person’s treasure.” So, I find shopping at second hand and thrift stores to be not only an adventure, but a great way to support a charity and reduce carbon footprint! In Boyle Street and McCauley I often see signs for garage and yard sales – explore and enjoy!

It also never hurts to use trash receptacles set up around the city to discard your “pocket trash” and personally I get a great feeling when I pick up and discard trash.

Mother Earth is a beautiful planet. Let us show her *re*spect not just on Earth Day, but every day!
